The Feast of the Venerable Bede

Monday 25 May

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty

[i] The Venerable Bede’s Feast Day falls on 25 May. Bede is commemorated as a “Father of Learning”. These words are the text of the magnificent memorial that adorns the east wall of the Galilee Chapel of the Shrine of St Bede in Durham Cathedral. They come from Bede’s commentary on the Book of Revelation, probably written sometime after the year 710. Bede is reflecting on the concluding words of Revelation Chapter Two (verse 28) “To the one who conquers I will give the morning star”. Bede transfigures the words of the Book of Revelation for he interprets the text recognising that “Christ is the morning star”.

[ii] Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603

[iii] Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

[iv] Walter Bagehot: “The English Constitution” (1867)

[v] Charles I, King and Martyr. Executed in Whitehall 30 January 1649.

[vii] John Milton (1608-1674) Poet and Civil Servant in the Republican Commonwealth, Serving under Oliver Cromwell

[viii] In August 2019 Mr Boris Johnson MP, Leader of the Conservative Party, prorogued Parliament. In September 2019 the Supreme Court ruled, unanimously, that the prorogation of Parliament was illegal. It was immediately recalled. The contention is that Mr Johnson had lied to the Sovereign. In so doing he compromised the political neutrality of the constitutional Head of State.

[ix] Following the Murder of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170, King Henry II of England performed public penance in Canterbury in July 1174.  Having travelled from London to Canterbury, tradition has it that King Henry crawled on his knees from the Parish Church of St Dunstan, outside the gate of the City Wall, to Canterbury Cathedral.

[x] Regicide: the death of Kings. John Milton was a Republican supporter of the discussion that led, in 1649, to the Execution of King Charles I.
